Intrigue and romance unlooked for

My Lord Protector (Beresford Adventures #2) by Cheryl Bolen

Murder, a young woman’s rapid flight from the scene, intrigue and romance! Oh, and a handsome, generous Earl, who though proper, is stymied by his sister’s new companion.
Henry Beresford, the Sixth Earl of Devere, hires Caroline Rutherford, really Charlotte Robinson, to guide his rather wilful sister through the traps of society. Lady Harriett doesn’t quite understand the ramifications when she bends the rules.
Charlotte had been the companion of a kindly woman, Mrs Betsy Wyndham, in the remote parts of Devon. Disturbed one night by a strange noise, Charlotte finds her employer lying on the floor dead. Charlotte opens a box containing written instructions about what to do if anything should happen to her employer. What Charlotte  doesn’t know is that Mrs Wyndham had in reality been a famous courtesan. The box she’d handed over to Charlotte included damning information about a nobleman. Now Charlotte is in danger.
Through friends Charlotte is able to secure employment with Lord Devere. Charlotte or rather Caroline, has secrets though that puts the whole Devere family at risk. As life with the Deveres  proceeds Caroline, finds herself in familiar situations that she must be careful about, lest her identity be revealed.
When foul play might comes calling on his household, Devere finds himself not only concerned, but attracted to his sister’s interesting companion. How to protect Caroline without compromising her?
All this makes for a wonderful plot. Unfortunately I found the delivery of the various lines between the two major proponents at times a tad flat. Despite this an enjoyable read.
I was rather intrigued by the political conversations of the time that Caroline took part in and loved the background that as Charlotte has to makes her equal to the task.
