The King of Shanghai: The Triad Years (Ava Lee Series #7) by Ian Hamilton

Ava is entering a new stage of her life without Uncle. I miss him, as does Ava, and certainly as does Sonny. Sonny is not quite as well kempt and a tad overweight as Ava discovers when she flies to Shanghai to meet with her business partners May Ling Wong and Amanda, Ava's sister-in-law .
Ava's relationship with her new business partners continues to allow story expansion, as does her developing relationship with the triad leader most like Uncle, Xu.
Xu is looking to becoming the new Triad chairman and he wants Ava's help.
Once more a brilliant addition to the series.
I am looking forward to Ava's future.

Murder in the Cloister ( Christine de Pizan Mystery #4)   by Tania Bayard             ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Murder and more in an ancient French priory near Paris. A Religious House supported by the King of France. An interesting medieval mystery read in terms of the history of the times and the widespread beliefs about sorcery. Christine de Pizan is tasked by King Charles VI, upon the request of the Dominican Prioress, to journey to the Royal Priory of Saint-Louis at Poissy, ostensibly to to copy an important manuscript and  visit her daughter who has taken orders there.  Christine knows there's more to the matter. The Priory has no need of her expertise, having plenty in house. She will be accompanied by Brother Michel from the Abbey of Saint-Denis and Henri de Picart.  Christine is warned by a member of Queen Isabeau's retinue that, ‘Something is wrong at Poissy, and they’re willing to do what the prioress asks because they’re concerned for t...

Storm Tide  (Mike Bowditch Mysteries #16) by Paul Doiron          ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ A tale in four seasons. Action explodes off every page  Maine game warden, Mike Bowditch, is first on scene at a house fire. A woman is holding a baby. Mike goes into the inferno and brings out a man who dies. A woman inside has already died. (Previously Mike has been demoted from Warden Investigator to patrolling game warden.) The dead couple are suspected of killing a young boy, their son. Nothing is ever proved but the couple are pariahs in the town. Mike little suspect he’ll be caught up in vigilantism, more deaths, and a grudge going back decades. I love that he has a trusty wolf hybrid, Shadow, to assist. His wife Stacey is an emergency medical technician. A fast moving, nerve wracking read. An Officer and a Gentleman's Daughte r  by Douglas Day Stewart   ⭐️⭐️ So I wanted to love this but it really stretched my sympathy. Mind you I’m not sure what my expectations were but this was not it. Zack Mayo and his daughter Shannon have had a yawning void between them for years. Eons ago Zack, hero fighter pilot, was asked by the President to resume his role with his fighter squadron in the Middle East, leaving his daughter mourning the death of her mother, floundering with her own and her father’s substance abuse. This just doesn’t cut it. Neither does referring to her father as royalty. Nope I’m not buying it. That’s the background. Fast forward a few years and that daughter is accepted into Officer Candidate School like her dad before her. Shannon is an overachiever on steroids (figure of speech!) All to buy her father’s approval and bolster her own feeling of self worth. The angst and emotions are palpable but I just felt deliberately squeezed. This wasn’t for me. Too ...
